The New York Times Sports: 2026
The first collaboration with The New York Times. This creative brief was to illustrate a sports story about how different Major League Baseball teams are using an AI tool called Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, and how some teams use it more aggressively than others.
ABS carefully analyses and measures the location of a pitch to tiny degrees to see whether or not the pitch is a strike.
The goal was to steer away from the common tropes of AI represented as a robot (ie. robot umpire), so instead the thought was to show surveillance cameras as fans of the opposing team scanning for the location of the ball.
This project had a quick turnaround of 2 days, which included 3 concept sketches, 4 additional modified sketches, and 2 modifications for the final.
